Summer Roadtrip: Croatia Montenegro

I took the idea of an easy summer road trip so literally that I ended up on a two weak holiday packing just 1 pair of shoes, 3 dresses and 1 swimming suit. I wasn’t backpacking and having a car there was enough space to get the whole wardrobe, but I wanted to be free of everything. A summer free of clothes, technology and work thoughts, just my Kindle and a list of books that I have been getting throughout the year without having the chance to read more than the first 10 pages. I also managed to keep my phone off and the camera away most of the time and just be present in the moment without the need to share.

Let me say that road trips are better after you are done with them. While we have grown up with movies romanticizing the idea of 10 hour drives, maybe it is better when done on the empty streets of American roads. A road trip in Europe in the crazy month of August isn’t like in the movies. It seemed to me that this year everyone in Italy, France, and Germany had decided to have the same holiday as mine, traveling through Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and Greece.

One of the rules of a road trip should be to think also about the return trip and not see everything just on the way to somewhere. Tinking about this we skipped Budva in Montenegro and went to lunch in a restaurant with the view of Sveti Stefan, the small island that was turned from a defence fort village into a luxury resort during the Tito regime in Yugoslavia. We kept going cutting through Montenegro with the idea of visiting in our way back. This never happened after going through a return trip stuck in traffic, and long customs lines to enter the European Union.
