Life often passes by without us even realizing it. We are always looking for a way to speed something up, or at least make it easier. However, in this fast-paced world taking the time to “stop and smell the roses” is some advice we should all listen to every once in a while. In a car we miss the full experience of nature and enjoyment of our surroundings. The icy cold air conditioning eliminates fresh breezes and natural smells. We can drive by landmarks without even noticing them, too preoccupied with our cellphones. While in everyday life we may not have the luxury of slowing down our pace, on vacation these rules don’t apply. Even if slowing down means riding on the back of a donkey, it is definitely a worthwhile change.
In Sicily we were able to explore beaches and towns by foot, which gave us the full experience. Walking allowed us to discover new places that are not always accessible by car. We climbed the Turkish steps, and enjoyed the glowing white rocks. We took a vineyard tour, even strolling through forest to see the source of the bottle’s cork. We even discovered a hidden away museum that contained tools from long lost professions like barbers, potters, and straw weavers. Had we not taken our time to walk through many of these destinations on the island, we never would have met the amazing people we did and experienced the beautiful sights we saw.
